Lyr is a nation with many large forests and rivers, and very few workable metals. This has been a significant feature in their history, and influences much of their culture. Armor tends to be lacquered wood, and curved slashing weapons are prized. Fabric is prized, and economy of clothing is important, leading to most peasants wearing kimono-style robes. Nobility tend towards more elaborate and wasteful designs, such as large draping robes, or intricately sewn complex designs. Lyr has little gender discrimination, but a complex caste system seperates the populace into different levels of society. The peasantry is the largest caste, and below them are the Untouchables, those whose duties require them to perform ‘unclean’ acts. Above the peasants are the merchant caste, better than peasants, and including those who are able to independently farm large areas. Above the merchants are the nobles and clergy, and the king above all. Astrology has long been a significant cultural pursuit, and the hereditary monarch is advised by a council of soothsayers. Despite their non-noble lineage, those who come from the families who watch the stars occupy the same general caste as those with noble blood. Nobility is traced back to the rulers of the original Lyran Confederacy, near 280 years ago.
